“Name the Space,” March 8th 2021 – Public intervention on International Women’s day.
With a small group of people we founded the ”Elsa Plainacher Kollektiv”. In reference to and in conjunction with Claim The Space! Alerta Feminista!, the Elsa Plainacher Collective—using clay originating from Karlsplatz-square area—creatednameshields to rename former Karlsplatz. These shields were placed in several locationsat the square, in commemoration of and to publically address the horror of recent feminicidesand of patriarchal violence in Austria and in the rest of the world. This action was also inspired by the feminist strike movement Ni Una Menos originated in Latin America.
The renaming of Karlsplatz has been discussed among several involved local activist/feministorganisations (among which the beforementioned), and the following names were proposed: ni una* menos platz; platz des feministischen widerstands; hexenplatz.
“Wo ist die Innen*stadt? (re)name the space,” 2021 – Public intervention, interactive feminist action, ceramics.
On June 30th 2021, the Elsa Plainacher Collective — named after Elsa Plainacher a women, who was publically burned as a “witch“ in Vienna in the 16th century – carried out a participatory action in Seestadt, Vienna (on Wangari-Maathai-Square). During this action, participants could paint street-signs with the names of female protagonists of their choice. The signs were made from the “Karlsplatz-clay,“ a clay that was found near Karlsplatz during the construction of the subway in the 70’s, and that was made available to the ceramic studio. As a feminist criticism of the male-dominated urban order, after painting the signs together, they were distributed by the participants in Vienna’s city-centre.
